Nanny Rights, Nanny Maternity & Sick LeaveMost families require a four week probation period to make sure the nanny fits into her new environment. Your employer must pay you the National Minimum Wage of £4.45/hour if you are aged 18 - 21 and £5.35/hour if you are over 22. However, be aware that this is not always the case if you are a live-in nanny. Whether you work as a full or part-time nanny, you have the right to four weeks holiday leave annually. When terminating a contract, you, as a nanny, are entitled to a week’s notice if they have been working for more than one month, and two weeks notice if they have been working for two years. Once the probation period is complete, most employers will give four weeks notice allowing time to find new childcare arrangements. Nannies are entitled to Statuary Maternity Pay (SMP) and maternity leave if they have been working for the same employer for at least nine months prior to the baby’s due date. To avoid any complications later on, Statuary Sick Pay (SSP) should be clearly worked out between the employer and the nanny when she begins work. SSP is a contribution made by the employer and comes into play when a nanny is ill for four days or more. Once again these official details can all be clarified by your nanny agency, so don’t hesitate to ask. Click here for details on recommended nanny agencies in your area.
